Kindergarten students - Landree Hinson, Carter Kidd, Evlyn Aduddell, Brynlee Babcock, Wesley Fields, Cameron Sedwick, Caydence Hudson, Brecken Ritter, Lillian Barkley, Ryan Keesee and teacher Melissa Ritter catch their breath after finding the run-away Gingerbread Man in their very own classroom. Ritter and her students tracked the sneaky cookie in a running scavenger hunt that included clues left all over the building. My kids were looking forward to running up and down the halls without any rules, Ritter said. As Pre-k students they watched last years class hunt, and they couldnt wait for their chance.

This Word Cloud represent ideas found in a column Kaylie Ritter wrote to given an opinion on the current gun debate over legislation surrounding firearm sales, which has been reignited since the mass shooting incident at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Nov. 5. Ritter covers this issue and presents her opinions. During the research stage of her writing process, Carson County Sheriff Loren Brand submitted his take on the topic to Ritter. I cant see that additional laws would do anything more than confuse the situation more, Brand said. Reinforcing the current laws makes the most sense, but it can be made confusing by political influences.

Returning teacher Pam Hutsell, center, greets parents as they arrive to pick up their children following the first day of school. Hutsell, who taught more than 30 years before retiring - including several years in kindergarten, came back to teach in the preschool program. Before you leave, give me a high five, Hutsell told each of her 14 students. Tomorrow, Hutsell will be greeting 15 students. I always like to say a personal good-bye and make certain that I see that each child gets to their parents, she said.

Britten has participated in basketball, tennis, track, cross country, National Honor Society, student council, Academic UIL, and One Act Play all through high school. She is a big role model to not only me, but lots of younger girls, sophomore Kleigh Keesee said.

Groom made it to state for the first time in the history of the school in the UIL One Act Play contest. In achieving that goal, both Charity Perry and Cutter Babcock earned honorable mention all-star cast awards. In addition, Groom had the privilege of performing Dark Road in the presence of the plays creator, playwright Laura Lundgren Smith, as well as numerous Groom fans. The winning schools were Abbott, first; Cross Plains, second; and Slidell, third.

This morning, April 12, Friemel thought she heard something in her bag while traveling to school on the route bus. After unzipping her bag, she found a baby bunny in her bag. When asked where the bunny came from sixth-grade teacher Jennifer Carter responded, We dont know. She unzipped her bag and found it. I told her she could keep it in my classroom. Ag teacher Kamy Whatley had an extra, unused small-animal enclosure to house the new class pet.

West Texas A&M University President Walter Wendler plans to visit more than 60 schools in five months. Wendlers goal is to get on the road of a Your Community, Your University tour of the Texas Panhandle. Wendler will be visiting Groom on Monday, March 27, at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Community members and board members are invited to attend, counselor Kaitlyn Moritz said.

Inclement weather conditions force the Groom Invitational Track Meet to end early. Wet conditions first had meet officials cancel the hurdle events. Then, following a coaches meeting, all events were called in the interest of safety. All field events did finish. Results can be found below by clicking the red link. Its not worth risking an injury, Superintendent Jay Lamb said of the decision to end early.

The group earned numerous of awards at District and will be advancing to bi-district, which will be on Thursday, March 23 in Fort Elliott. It was nerve-wracking waiting to see if we would get called, freshman Ginna Miller said.

Eighth-graders Braedon Williams and Gunner Lamb make their usual Tiger Cycle service project rounds, collecting paper for recycling on Friday, March 3, even though their adviser Jowannah Powers was away at the state basketball tournament. Accoding to totals from their last collection, the group has rescued and recycled more than 1,969 pounds of paper since Nov. 30, 2016. As her students collected pounds of paper, her daughter Karson Powers team, the Panhandle Pantherettes, collected points at the UIL State Basketball Tournament in San Antonio. They won 62-37 over Woden and will play Martins Mill tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the championship.

With his handy yo-yo at his side, author Stephen Hartman explains the character-building ideas that make up his new books title, which is ZACHO. Hartman also offered students a deal when he came and spoke today. He gave students a discounted book price of $12, as well as their own yo-yo, which was a featured part of his Feb. 22 presentation in the school auditorium. Students have five days to bring their money back to school to take advantage of this offer from the author. Look, what I got, second-grader Emily Britten said after Hartmans presentation. And, look what he did, she said as she pointed to a personal note and signature that the author had left in her copy.

Senior Carson Ritter goes up for a layup. The Tigers won their game against the White Deer Bucks. We played our best game of the season, and we got big win, freshman Whitt Ward said. I was happy that we won because that means we still have a chance of getting into the playoffs.

Fifth-graders Ryan Weinheimer, Jacob Ragain and Gage Whatley show off their award-winning artwork today outside of Mrs. Dana Brittens class. The McClellan Creek Soil and Water Conservation Board sponsored the contest. Weinheimer took first place; Ragain placed second, and Whatley earned the third spot. I was surprised I won,Weinheimer said. I was surprised when I got second, Ragain said. It was cool to get third because there was fair competition, Whatley said. I am thankful that I placed.

Gifts await Groom seniors in the gym today. Cheerleaders prepared goodies for the six senior football players. Tonight, Oct. 28, seniors will play their last home football game against the Valley Patriots at 7:30. Its hard to believe that its already senior night and that this will be my last game on this field, senior Mason Miller said. Its gonna be a night Ill remember forever.

Coach Kylee Armentas math classroom hosted the latest mechanical failure at Groom School. The air conditioner seized up, according to Superintendent Jay Lamb, creating a smokey smell throughout the building, but no flames were associated with the malfunction. A new motor was ordered to replace the unit. The system was back online within less than 24 hours.

Senior artist Leslie Germany with the help of freshman artist William Kelly put up the ceiling tile that was painted for the journalism room. After working on these tiles since the second week of school, students are finally wrapping up this project. I love my tile, Jennifer Carter said. It looks great.

During the opinion section, Treadwell also becomes a significant part of the almost-end-of-school banter.
