Senior Leslie Germany is the 18-year-old daughter of Gracie Germany of White Deer. Leslie has attended Groom Independent School District for five years and has helped with the online newspaper and yearbook for three years. Germany participates in cross country, basketball, track, One Act Play and UIL. She also is an active member of her youth group at St. Vincent de Paul in Pampa. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her family and friends.

The 2017 seniors gather in front of the State National Bank of Groom on Broadway street. This photo is one of many that can be found among the 2016-17 yearbook ads. This years senior class also has earned another point of recognition. These students have the highest percentage in FASFA completion for the entire Texas Panhandle area, and thanks to a program sponsored by the P-16 Council at Region 16 and Amarillos Education Credit Union, one of these students, who will be announced at the graduation ceremony on Friday at 8 p.m. in the GHS auditorium, will receive an additional scholarship for that accomplishment. This is big deal for two reasons - first, by completing the application, students are able to see what grants they qualify for, and they make themselves eligible for many scholarships that require FAFSA completion, counselor Kaitlyn Moritz said. Secondly, by winning this contest, one lucky GISD student will win a $500 scholarship. The winner was determined by a random drawing, and their name will be announced at graduation.

Sixth-grader Ali Friemel cuddles her new friend, which took up its own spot as a stow-away in her unzipped backpack before she left home. This morning, April 12, Friemel thought she heard something in her bag while traveling to school on the route bus. After unzipping her bag, she found a baby bunny in her bag. When asked where the bunny came from sixth-grade teacher Jennifer Carter responded, We dont know. She unzipped her bag and found it. I told her she could keep it in my classroom. Ag teacher Kamy Whatley had an extra, unused small-animal enclosure to house the new class pet.

OAP advances to regionals from area. The cast and crew will perform in Levelland on Saturday, April 8. We are doing much better than I thought we would, junior actor Jamey Germany said. Im very proud of everyone . We wouldnt be here without each other.

Groom One Act Play advances to area from bi-district. Area will be Monday, April 3 at Randall High School. This Friday, March 31, will be the community performance at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Arrive early if you would like to purchase the $7 dinner. Serving will begin at 5:30 p.m. Children under school age can eat for $5. Advancing is really great, but in order to keep advancing, we need to keep working hard, senior stage manager Mason Miller said.

Do not disturb signs filled the hallways all the way through the school on Tuesday, March. 28. Several grades took STAAR writing and math tests today. These days can be exhausting, but its nice for our students to get the opportunity to show off what they know, English teacher Lisa Roskens said.

West Texas A&M University President Walter Wendler plans to visit more than 60 schools in five months. Wendlers goal is to get on the road of a Your Community, Your University tour of the Texas Panhandle. Wendler will be visiting Groom on Monday, March 27, at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Community members and board members are invited to attend, counselor Kaitlyn Moritz said.

Teal took the victory in this match, which was one of many March 20 match-ups, that kept the Groom courts busy with students from Groom, Hedley, McLean and White Deer. Groom OAP will be performing at district contest on Thursday, March 9. The estimated time for Groom High School to perform is at 12:20 p.m., but be sure to arrive early. We have only two official start times… Hedley HS at 11:30am, and Lefors HS at 2:15pm. All other times are estimates, District Contest Manager Billy Boone said in an email to each school. Please make sure that the rolling schedule is communicated to all parties involved.

Journalism adviser Lisa Roskens prepares yearbook order forms to be sent home with students today, Feb. 27. Spring picture day took place this morning, and all students were included in the all-school photo with their own pair of sunglasses. I want to make sure all yearbook purchases are made as soon as possible so we can make sure we order the correct number of books, Roskens said. April 1 is our due date with the publisher.

According to several media reports, including this 2016 round-up of data and studies from Vanity Fair, racial profiling fears have become a common concern in society. Racial profiling policies are in place, including complaint procedures and regular review of video by supervisory staff is conducted in accordance with law, sheriff Loren Brand said on his Facebook page in an email to GroomTigerTimes. We remain vigilant and are always aware of the culturally diverse nature of our society.

Senior Caroline Britten looks at the new activity bus that arrived this morning after a couple months of waiting. Its nice, senior Carson Ritter said. Thats for sure. However, there was an issue found with the bus. The dashboard was not attached properly. A decision is being made now whether the bus will be fixed on site in Groom or returned to Lubbock for this repair. Once that is accomplished, the vehicle will be in prime condition. Even without it arriving in perfect condition, though, several students already were happy to see it. The bus is so awesome, Britten said.

The names of two suspects involved in an officer-involved shooting incident with deputies from the Carson County Sheriffs Department have been released. The deputies were placed on administrative leave with pay. We place officers on three days paid administrative leave as per our policy for any officer involved shootings, Brand said. We have to cover the shifts with our existing officers when an officer(s) is on leave.

The senior class will be hosting a raffle for this quilt tonight, Feb. 3, during Senior night, and tomorrow, Feb. 4. during the junior high tournament. Tigers and Tigerettes will be playing White Deer today, starting at 6 p.m. Senior recognition will be between the girls and boys games. The raffle tickets for the quilt will be $1. The scheduled drawing for the yearbook raffle has been delayed to allow the focus to stay on the seniors tonight, adviser Lisa Roskens said. Im excited for senior night, senior Caroline Britten said. We have a lot of special things happening throughout the games.

High school students traveled to Pavs Tire Services yesterday afternoon to learn how to check oil, use a tire gauge, etc. On STAAR Wednesdays, high school students spend time preparing for college and adulthood. The McClellan Creek Soil and Water Conservation Board sponsored the contest. Weinheimer took first place; Ragain placed second, and Whatley earned the third spot. I was surprised I won,Weinheimer said. I was surprised when I got second, Ragain said. It was cool to get third because there was fair competition, Whatley said. I am thankful that I placed.

Senior Mason Miller picks up a hose on the back of one of the fire trucks at the Groom Volunteer Fire Department. Millers dream of becoming a fire fighter is something hes wanted for quite some time. In May, when I graduate, I plan to do my Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Clinicals, finish my EMT class and gain my EMT-Basic certification, Miller said. After that, I plan to attend the Amarillo Fire Academy.

Freshman Kaylie Ritter looks over her practice STAAR test. Groom is instituting a new program, STAAR Wednesdays, to help the district take, specific action to getting the highest grades possible. Groom was recently notified by the Texas Education Agency that the district received these accountability scores: Domain I (Student Achievement) - C Domain II (Student Progress) - B Domain III (Closing Performance Gaps) - F Domain IV (Post-Secondary Readiness) - A. I do not believe that these scores are indicative of the job that we do on our campus, Principal Stephen Vanderpool said. But I do believe that we should take them for what they are and use them as motivation to continue to improve the lives and education of the students we see on a daily basis.

In my last school, we did something fun, we posted their senior pictures with little pennants for the school(s) theyd been accepted to, Moritz said. I thought I might do something similar here. Its a fun class typically, senior Garet Rocha said. We do all sorts of projects that I would have never thought about doing, like using chalk to draw on paper.

New buses are on their way. The school board voted to invest in two buses on Dec. 20, 2016. Groom ISD purchased a 46-passenger activity bus as well as another 71-passenger Bluebird route bus. Im super excited about getting the new buses, senior Caroline Britten said. They look really sharp.

The junior class stack their hands to show off their new class rings. Seven juniors attended the annual Ring Ceremony meeting, hosted by Jostens Todd Morgan, in the auditorium today, Dec. 12, with their family and friends. I was so excited that we finally got them during the ceremony, Jamey Germany said. It kicked in that graduation may seem far away, but in reality, its close. In addition, to senior rings, secretary Frances Payton received a ring that Principal Steven Vanderpool and Superintendent Jay Lamb presented to her before the juniors ceremony. To surprise her, Jostens and everyone in school came down for the ceremony where the ring was presented as a gift to her in honor of her 36 years of service to Groom ISD.

Nov. 18, Groom girls joined hundreds of other high school girls in grades 10-12 from around the Panhandle in the Amarillo Civic Center to watch Dream, Girl, a documentary that showcases the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs. It was very interesting, junior Helena Ybarra said. Producer Erin Bagwell even came in to personally inspire viewers. It was obvious to see that she (Bagwell) really did care about she was showing us and about what she put into her film, junior Chelsey Lamb said.

The Groom News owner and publisher Donna Burton sets her aim straight on Groom students, following an annual athletic banquet, one of many school events that shes attended over the past several years. In spite of Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer that has progressed through much of her body, Burton, wakes each day and chooses her community first. It is so unfortunate that the battle mom is fighting has thwarted her ability to continue being a vibrant leader that is right out in the middle of everything in Groom, daughter April Jones said. I can promise you all, that is where she wants to be is right out there with you.

Basketball season for all teams will be officially starting this week. Tonight, Nov. 17, starting at 5 both junior high teams will take on McLean. Im excited that our first game is on our home court, eighth-grader Aubrey Ritter said. I think were gonna win.

The important flags that are hanging up on the back wall of the auditorium are just a few of the decorations that you can find at the Veterans Program tonight at 6:30. The senior class will host a beans and cornbread supper, starting at 5 p.m. until the program begins. Then, the National Honor Society will induct their new members after the program. I feel very privileged to get inducted, junior Jamey Germany said. It encourages me to keep working hard.

After several months of discussing the 2016 bond proposal for improvements at Groom School. The bond passed, and renovations will begin in the summer of 2017. I had no doubt that it would pass, Louise Harrell Mulkey said on the Groom Tiger Times Facebook page. Groom people care about their children and grandchildren and want the best education possible for them, she continued. Thats why the school has survived and thrived all these years.
